Unlike previous Grand Theft Auto games, San Andreas takes place across an entire state rather than a single city. Players are introduced to new protagonist Carl "CJ" Johnson as he departs Liberty City in 1992 and returns to his home state of San Andreas following his mother's murder in a drive-by shooting.
